According to the International Ecotourism Society ecotourism is:
'Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains or even improves the well-being and welfare of local people'.

The Ecotourism Association of Australia goes a step further, saying:
'Ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation'.

You can do your bit by cutting down on air travel, basing your holiday around nature and other cultures to gain an appreciation of them, and supporting the protection of natural areas by generating economic benefits for host communities. You should try to minimise the negative impacts your visit might have on natural, social and economic environments, and never buy souvenirs derived from plants or animals.
